Follow Your Own Path

Can you remember the first time you lifted weights?

I can remember struggling to bench press 40kg, not knowing how to squat or deadlift. I would look at guys who could bench press the 30kg Dumbbells and think wow that’s impressive, I’d like to be able to do that.

I had a good conversation with a friend of mine about training & the journey of getting stronger.

The guy has been training for a long 15 years, competing in national level bodybuilding competitions, he’s still in great shape and it’s always interesting to hear him speak.

The thing I really like about him Is that he is open minded toward training, he has principles but he isn’t afraid to try new things, some people who have been training years get stuck in their ways and don’t move on with the times.

There is more research and information out there for training and nutrition than when he first started training.

Anyway we got talking about training and how people compare themselves to what others are lifting.

This doesn’t matter!

Learn to enjoy the process and be patient, squatting to a max of say 100kg for 5 reps compared to the guy who’s been training years doing 200kg for 5 reps, you are working just as hard.

Respect that getting stronger and building muscle takes time & effort consistently. That guy with 200kg on his back started somewhere.

The same goes for losing fat, comparing yourself to a fitness model, who’s job is to look really lean all the time, that may also be getting some help from special supplements and you end up getting frustrated because you don’t look like him after 10 weeks of following his diet plan.

Be realistic about what you can achieve, it’s about what you can do at that moment, your own journey.

If you have only been strength training a few months you won’t be able to do what the guy who has years of training experience is doing, so don’t compare yourself to them.

This is what makes training so rewarding, you are rewarded for the work & time that you put into it.

Thought for the week, think about you and your progress not what others are doing.
